Apple Confirms End-of-Life for Intel-Based MacBooks with macOS 27

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) has shed light on the company’s plans for its operating system, including the end of support for older hardware. Starting from macOS 26, only four Intel-based Macs will be supported: the 16-inch MacBook Pro from 2019, the 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports from 2020, the 27-inch iMac from 2020, and the Mac Pro from 2019.

This decision is likely due to the significant performance gap between Intel-based processors and Apple’s newer ARM-based Apple Silicon architecture. As a result, developers will focus on macOS under ARM, further limiting the potential of older Macs.

While security updates and some features like Spotlight and Continuity will be available for three years after macOS 26’s release, the classic MacBook Pro models will not receive new feature additions. The company’s focus on updating its user interface across operating systems has led to a lack of significant updates for core applications.

However, Apple’s support window for the MacBook Pro is expected to last around four years, with security updates and some features available until 2027 or later. This decision marks the end of an era for the classic MacBook Pro, as it transitions towards newer hardware architecture.
