Apple CEO Tim Cook has donated $1 million to President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration fund, according to sources. The move comes as a number of tech giants, including Amazon and Meta, are contributing large sums to the event. Cook, who is known for his strong relationships with politicians across party lines, made the donation in the spirit of unity.
Cook has been an outspoken advocate for engagement between technology companies and policymakers. He has built personal rapport with former President Donald Trump over the years, despite their differences, and even gave him a Mac Pro computer in 2019.
Other Silicon Valley tech giants are also contributing to the inauguration, including Uber, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Toyota, Ford, and GM, which have all pledged at least $1 million. Wall Street firms like Goldman Sachs and Bank of America are also donating seven-figure sums.
The donations from tech companies come as Trump noted that he is returning to the White House with warmer relations with Big Tech leaders. He said he looks forward to visiting with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos next week, following a similar meeting with Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Mar-a-Lago.
