Apple’s newest generative AI feature in iOS 18.2 is providing inaccurate summaries of news alerts, raising concerns about the reliability of information. The feature, designed to summarize groups of notifications from an app on a user’s iPhone, has been spotted incorrectly summarizing at least two instances of news articles from reputable sources such as the BBC and New York Times.
The nonprofit organization Reporters Without Borders has called for Apple to remove the feature, citing that AIs are probability machines and cannot make fact-based decisions. The group’s head, Vincent Berthier, stated that automated production of false information can damage a media outlet’s credibility and threaten public access to reliable news.
The BBC has filed a complaint with Apple, stating it is essential for their audiences to trust the information published under their name. Apple has yet to respond to requests for comment on this matter.
