Apple is finally shifting its stance on laptop touchscreens, introducing a new product tier called the MacBook Ultra. This premium machine will feature an OLED display and touchscreen input, designed to sit above the MacBook Pro in the lineup. The hardware carries codenames K114 and K116 for 14-inch and 16-inch models, with a target launch in fall 2026.
The MacBook Ultra is not a replacement for the MacBook Pro or a spec bump with a touchscreen bolted on. Instead, it’s a distinct product tier that follows Apple’s Ultra branding strategy, which emphasizes “best we can build, priced accordingly.” This move signals a clearer hierarchy in the Mac lineup, with the Air remaining as the volume option and the Pro as the professional workhorse.
The touchscreen feature will work alongside the existing trackpad and keyboard, rather than replacing them. There’s no sign of a detachable screen or convertible design. Apple is positioning touch as a premium-only feature, not a platform-wide shift. The company has built an indirect-touch system around the trackpad, Force Touch, and the now-retired Touch Bar to keep fingers off the display.
Several forces have contributed to this change, including the growth of iPadOS into a truly capable platform, stage manager, external display support, and desktop-class Safari. Competitors like Microsoft’s Surface line and Lenovo’s Yoga series have offered touchscreen laptops for over a decade, making it increasingly rare for Apple to create an entirely new notebook category.
The MacBook Ultra reportedly stops short of a Mac-iPad hybrid, with touch functioning alongside the keyboard and trackpad, not above them. The price is expected to be north of $4,000, which aligns with Apple’s premium pricing strategy.
