Apple is set to release its new iPhone 17 series this fall, including a slim model dubbed iPhone Air. According to a report, the device will feature a radically different design that signals a move towards products without charging ports.
Dummy models released by prolific leaker Sonny Dickson show the iPhone 17 Air with an Action Button instead of a Ring/Mute slider, similar to the entry-level iPhone 16e. The Camera Control feature, which is mechanical and touch-sensitive, will also be present on the new model, albeit slimmer than on other models.
The device will include MagSafe, dispelling any doubts about its inclusion given its slim design. A report from Bloomberg suggests that this move is not just a marketing gimmick, but rather a new beginning for the iPhone series.
The iPhone 17 Air’s design aims to shave off around 2 millimeters from the phone’s depth, reducing it by roughly a fifth. Despite this change, battery life will remain comparable to current iPhones. The plan was originally to make the Air device Apple’s first completely port-free iPhone, with no USB-C connector and wireless charging as an option.
However, concerns over European Union regulators’ mandate on iPhone switches to USB-C have led to the inclusion of a port. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman believes that removing the port would upset regulators, so it will remain on the forthcoming device.
The price of the iPhone 17 Air is expected to be around $899, similar to the iPhone 16 Plus. The device features a 6.6-inch display, a single rear camera with 48-megapixel resolution, and an in-house modem called Apple C1.
