Apple is rumored to release a new design for its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro Max family. A closer look at the main camera through third-party cases reveals key details about the phone’s redesign. Sonny Dickson, an Apple commentator, has shared renders of the iPhone 17 Pro Max that show a significant increase in the camera island on the rear of the phone and a second island for the flash and sensors.
The three-lens arrangement remains the same as the current iPhone 16 Pro Max models. However, the recent launch of the iPhone 16e with a “two-in-one” single-lens design may indicate that Apple could offer similar functionality with one or more lenses in the future. This would require additional camera hardware, resulting in a new design similar to the one seen here.
The three key sensors for the rear camera – flash for low-light photography, microphone for video recording, and LIDAR sensor for depth information – now reside in their own space, creating a camera bar across the rear of the handset. This design element is expected to appear on the iPhone 17 Air as well, although it will be narrower with only one lens.
The focus on photography in the new design aligns with Apple’s history of emphasizing imaging capabilities in its smartphones. The upcoming iPhone 16e hints at new lens technology, and discussions around a reworked camera island suggest a desire to offer more space for new hardware.
