Apple’s long-rumored foldable iPhone is reportedly on schedule for a potential launch in the second half of next year. The device, codenamed “iPhone Fold,” has reached the Prototype 1 stage, where fully functional devices are created. This marks an important milestone in Apple’s design and testing process.
The company typically starts with mockups and eventually creates realistic dummy models to test the device’s look, feel, and weight. Next comes the creation of prototype hardware in breadboard form, followed by a realistic prototyping stage, where fully functional units are tested.
According to supply chain sources, Apple began its initial Prototype 1 phase in June. If everything stays on track, the device could complete prototype testing by the end of 2025 and proceed to the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) stage. A possible launch in the second half of 2026 is still a possibility.
One analyst notes that Apple’s “best not first” approach aims to solve common issues with foldable smartphones, such as a visible crease in the display. The company’s high standards are expected to result in an advanced screen from display partner Samsung.
The iPhone Fold’s specifications remain unclear, but leaks suggest it will feature a titanium body, 7.58-inch display, and dual 48MP rear cameras. Some speculate that the design of the upcoming iPhone 17 Air was a stepping stone toward the iPhone Fold.
