Apple has officially launched the Digital ID feature in its Apple Wallet app, allowing users to store and present their identity securely. The feature uses a US passport as the source of verification and is now rolling out to everyone in the United States.
To create Digital ID, users follow similar steps to adding a driver’s license: open the Wallet app, tap “Add” and choose “Digital ID or Driver’s License,” then complete a series of on-screen steps. The process includes taking a passport photo, reading the chip on the back, and completing facial movements for verification.
The feature provides secure authentication using Face ID or Touch ID, protecting against tampering and theft. Biometric data is encrypted, and only necessary information is shared during transactions. Users can review and authorize the requested information before it’s shared.
Digital ID can be used at TSA checkpoints in over 250 US airports for domestic travel and will expand to businesses, organizations, and online verification in the future. Apple Vice President Jennifer Bailey says the feature expands users’ ability to store and present their identity securely.
This marks a significant step forward for Digital ID solutions in the United States, allowing everyone with a passport to create a secure digital ID, regardless of their state’s adoption of mobile driver’s licenses. Users can begin creating their Digital ID in Apple Wallet today by heading to the app on their iPhone.
