Apple Maps is now smarter than ever in the latest iOS update, bringing several new features that enhance navigation and exploration. While Google Maps remains a strong contender, Apple’s offering has seen significant improvements with iOS 18.
Topographic maps are available on iOS 18 in the US and Japan, covering all 63 US national parks. Users can view contour lines and trail details by zooming into the map. To access topographical maps:
1. Open Apple Maps and search for a location like Yosemite National Park.
2. Zoom in to reveal more detail, including contour lines and elevation numbers.
Discover Hikes and Trails:
Apple Maps now allows users to find hikes and trails, filtering them by length, route type, and elevation. To discover hikes:
1. Find a location using the search box or your current location.
2. Filter results by selecting options at the top of the card (length, route type, elevation).
3. Tap Apply to see filtered recommendations.
Create Custom Routes:
Users can create their own walking routes for hiking trails not included in the recommendations. To create a custom route:
1. View the Library section and tap Route.
2. Create a new route by tapping “Create Route.”
3. Add points on the map to build up your route, with Apple Maps providing guidance along the way.
Drop Multiple Pins:
It’s now possible to drop multiple pins on a map to find different spots. To do this:
1. Touch and hold a location to make it a marked location.
2. Select Pin from the options below.
3. Add more pins by repeating the process for another location.
New Places Library:
The new Places Library allows users to save curated Maps Guides, national park hikes, custom routes, and places. To access:
1. View the Library section at the bottom of the map screen.
2. Check categories (Pinned, Places, Guides, Routes) to find saved or created items.
With these new features, Apple Maps offers enhanced navigation and exploration capabilities for iOS 18 users.
