Apple Names New Designer After Departure of Controversial Alan Dye

Apple has announced that Stephen Lemay, a decades-old UI designer, will replace departing head of user interface design Alan Dye. Industry voices have welcomed the news, citing Lemay’s attention to detail and craftsmanship as key positives.

Dye, who spent over 20 years at Apple, designed for the Vision Pro headset, iPhone X, and Apple Watch. His recent work on Liquid Glass has faced criticism for legibility issues and distracting visual effects. In contrast, Lemay is seen as a positive change with his experience in designing major Apple interfaces since 1999.

Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed Lemay’s appointment, citing his role in shaping every major interface at the company. Industry insiders praise Lemay, saying he will bring much-needed design expertise to Meta, where Dye will lead a new creative studio in Reality Labs.
