Apple needs to be honest about its capabilities, particularly with its digital assistant Siri, to fix Apple Intelligence. The company’s failure to meet expectations at WWDC 2024 was evident when it announced a new, more personal Siri, which showed a product that was nowhere near ready.
At the heart of this promise was App Intents, a feature designed to give Siri access to users’ personal information on their iPhone. During the WWDC presentation, Apple demoed Siri responding to a request from Kelsey Peterson, but the actual experience has been disappointing.
The company did not let press and attendees try the new version of Siri at the conference, and it appears that the demo was more like an elaborate concept video than an actual demonstration. Instead, Apple rolled out its features piecemeal, delaying the upgrade to sometime in the coming year.
This lack of transparency has led to a decline in trust with customers. The damage has been done with notification summaries, which have caused issues with aggregated news and resulted in paused notifications. Other features like Image Playground and Genmoji are forgettable because they offer little utility.
For Apple Intelligence to succeed, the company must start by being honest with its users about what it can deliver. This includes acknowledging when promises cannot be fulfilled. With WWDC 2025 approaching, Apple has a chance to right some of the sins of last year’s conference and set the stage for improvement.
