Apple Plans to Equip Watches with Cameras by 2027

Apple is working on integrating cameras into its wearables, including the Apple Watch, to enhance AI features such as Visual Intelligence. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, camera-equipped AI wearables are expected to be released by 2027.

The Apple Watch will feature cameras “inside the display” for the standard Series model, while the Apple Watch Ultra will have a camera on the side, next to the digital crown and button. This will enable the watch to “see the outside world and deliver relevant information” using AI-powered Visual Intelligence.

The technology debuted on iPhone 16, allowing users to add event details to their calendar or look up restaurant info with just a glance. Apple hopes to power this feature with its own in-house models by 2027.

Visual Intelligence is underpinned by AI models from other companies and will depend on the leadership of Mike Rockwell, who is now overseeing the development of Siri LLM upgrade and visionOS software for another upcoming wearable, likely AR glasses.
