Apple is reportedly developing a smart doorbell camera that uses Face ID to unlock users’ doors, according to Bloomberg News. The device could be released by the end of next year and would likely work with existing HomeKit smart locks.
The camera would use Apple’s in-house “Proxima” combination Wi-Fi/Bluetooth chip, which is also set to roll out for new HomePod Mini and Apple TV devices. PYMNTS has contacted Apple for comment but has not received a reply yet.
This development follows previous reports that Apple is working on a device combining artificial intelligence, apps, and smart home functions. The aim is to give Apple a competitive edge in the market, with plans to sell multiple units to consumers for use as an intercom system.
The move could indicate Apple’s broader ambition to capture a larger share of the smart home market, where consumers are increasingly looking for centralized control of their connected devices and seamless ways to make purchases via voice commands and touchscreen interfaces.
