Apple has been sending unsolicited ads to iPhone users through a push notification in the Wallet app. The message promotes a limited-time discount on movie tickets for F1: The Movie, which debuts in theaters next month. Some users are upset, claiming they were not given explicit consent to receive such messages.
According to Apple’s guidelines, push notifications should only be used for promotions or direct marketing purposes if users have opted-in. However, it appears that some iPhone users received the ad despite being on a version of iOS older than 26, where an “Offers & Promotions” toggle is available to opt in or out. This lack of consent has sparked disappointment among some users.
Apple did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The incident highlights concerns about Apple’s use of push notifications for marketing purposes, and the need for greater transparency and user control over these messages.
