Apple Suspends AI Feature Causing News Headline Errors

Apple has suspended an artificial intelligence feature that generated inaccurate summaries of news headlines, following complaints from several organizations, including the BBC. The feature was part of Apple’s Apple Intelligence label and aimed to summarize users’ news notifications into a single alert on their lock screens.

The issue came to light after Apple issued fake news alerts bearing the BBC logo, falsely stating that Luigi Mangione had shot himself, Luke Littler had won the PDC World Darts final, and Rafael Nadal had “come out” as gay. Other affected organizations included New York Times and Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

Apple has assured users that the feature will be unavailable until its next software update, which aims to improve accuracy and warn iPhone users of potential errors with italicized text. The company had previously planned to keep the feature but shifted its stance after criticism from the National Union of Journalists in the UK, who called for it to be removed due to concerns over misinformation and harm to journalism.
