Apple plans to release a software update aimed at improving user understanding of its AI-generated notification summaries. The update comes after reports that such summaries contained errors, including a misleading notification about alleged murderer Luigi Mangione’s death by suicide. The notifications, generated by Apple Intelligence’s large language model, have an icon indicating they are not normal app notifications.
However, the icon’s meaning may be unclear to users, who can disable these summaries through their Settings app. An Apple spokesperson stated that AI features, including notification summaries, are in beta and continually improved with user feedback. A software update will further clarify when text is from Apple Intelligence. The company encourages users to report concerns if they receive unexpected notifications.
The issue cannot be fixed entirely, as individual devices process different notifications at varying times, affecting the wording of summary messages. Apple’s response acknowledges this limitation and emphasizes the importance of user feedback in improving AI-driven features.
