Apple to Open iOS Features to Third-Party Devices by EU Deadline

The European Union has outlined specific requirements for Apple to improve the interoperability of its iOS operating system, which could enable third-party smartwatches, headphones, and speakers to access exclusive features. The guidance, part of the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) law, sets a deadline for Apple to comply with these rules by the end of 2025.

According to the EU specifications, two main measures need to be implemented: improving the application process for developers who request interoperability with Apple’s ecosystem and making nine iOS-exclusive connectivity features available on other platforms. These features include:

– Opening access to iOS notifications, allowing third-party smartwatches to display and interact with them
– Enabling apps to run in the background without interruption, facilitating data collection from connected iPhones
– Sharing SharePlay capabilities and audio-switching features between devices
– Allowing devices to use the same high-bandwidth iPhone connections currently only available on Apple hardware

The EU’s requirements also include making it easier for users to set up third-party devices without downloading companion apps, automatically connecting to Wi-Fi networks via iPhones, and easily receiving contactless payment credentials via NFC transfer.

Failure to comply with these rules could result in non-compliance investigations and fines of up to 10% of Apple’s annual turnover. The company has the opportunity to appeal the EU’s decisions, subject to judicial review.
