Apple plans to open up its large language models powering AI features to third-party developers, reports Bloomberg. The company will start by providing access to its smaller on-device models via a software development kit (SDK). This move is similar to Google’s expected launch of Gemini Nano AI APIs for developers during the current Google I/O event.
Third-party developers can already use limited AI features in Apple Intelligence, such as summaries and image rewrites. However, the new SDK won’t initially provide access to cloud-based models, which means it won’t change much for apps that rely on their own models like ChatGPT or Grok.
The plan is to announce this move at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting June 9th, alongside rumored “Solarium” updates for iOS, macOS, and iPadOS. This move aims to make these operating systems more unified and similar to the Vision Pro operating system.
