Apple is planning to support third-party virtual reality (VR) game controllers on its Apple Vision Pro headset, a move aimed at improving the gaming experience and potentially boosting sales. According to reports, the company has partnered with Sony Group Corp. to make this happen.
The partnership will enable the use of popular VR controllers like PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers, which are currently supported by the duo. Apple has also prototyped a custom “wand” controller for Vision Pro, similar to an Apple Pencil for more precise control.
While the company has faced disappointing sales so far, with fewer than half a million units sold, proper support for VR gaming could be a game-changer. The introduction of third-party controllers will make it easier for developers to create games compatible with the headset, and potentially increase user engagement.
The partnership is still in the works, but Apple aims to introduce support for third-party hand controllers soon, pending any last-minute issues. Despite the delay, the company remains committed to investing in the Vision Pro product category, ensuring its continued relevance in the market.
