Apple is moving closer to adopting microLED displays, a technology that promises brighter and more efficient screens with improved color accuracy. Foxconn, a key supplier for the company, has announced plans to begin mass production of microLED screens late next year.
Currently, Apple uses OLED displays in its products such as the iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, but it is also working on transitioning to microLED technology. MicroLED offers several advantages over OLED, including better brightness, longer lifespan, and power efficiency without the burn-in weakness.
Foxconn has partnered with Porotech to develop microLED technology for future augmented reality (AR) headsets. The company plans to establish a production line in Taichung and expects mass production to begin in Q4 2025, with products incorporating the tech likely launching in Q1 2026.
The partnership aims to provide high-performance and compact AR display solutions, meeting the demands of “future mainstream global clients.”
