Apple is set to unveil its first major update to the iPhone SE since 2022, and the news comes after a cryptic comment from CEO Tim Cook. The announcement will be part of a flurry of product news this week, including the rollout of Apple TV+ to Android phones and the launch of Beats’ Powerbeats Pro 2 with heart-rate monitoring.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the new iPhone SE will have a significant impact on sales, with estimated shipments of around 12-20 million units in the first half of 2025. The device is expected to feature Apple Intelligence and an A18 chip, similar to those found in the iPhone 16. The phone may also retain its larger screen and Face ID, marking a departure from previous iPhone SE models.
Gurman notes that the new iPhone SE will have an in-house modem, which could give Apple an advantage over Qualcomm in terms of patent licensing fees. Additionally, the device’s design may be rebranded as the “newest member of the family,” potentially indicating a change in the company’s naming convention.
The upcoming release marks the retirement of the current iPhone SE and the end of Touch ID, a feature that was introduced in 2007 with the first iPhone. The new phone will likely be an affordable option with an original design, rather than an inherited one.
Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhone SE on February 19, with pre-sales potentially opening on February 21. Reviews are expected to appear around February 26 or 27, and the device’s release date is set for February 28.
