Apple has confirmed it will update its artificial intelligence (AI) feature, which has generated inaccurate news alerts on its latest iPhones, following a complaint from the BBC. The company acknowledged the flaws in its notification summaries and stated that a software update would clarify when the text being displayed is summarization provided by Apple Intelligence.
The issue arose after the BBC’s AI-generated summary falsely told some readers that Luigi Mangione had shot himself, despite him not being involved in a shooting incident. Similar errors have been reported for other news outlets, including an incorrect claim about Rafael Nadal coming out as gay.
Apple says its update will arrive “in the coming weeks” and aims to improve the feature’s performance with user feedback. The company has received criticism from several organizations, including Reporters Without Borders, which called on Apple to disable the feature due to concerns over generative AI services’ reliability.
