For the first time in over a decade, Apple plans to update every single Mac model to the M4 chip, according to recent rumors. This marks a significant shift in the company’s refresh cycle, which has been inconsistent in the past.
Earlier this fall, Apple introduced the first Macs with M4: MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini. These models featured upgraded Thunderbolt ports, nano-texture display options, and improved Center Stage cameras. However, other Mac lines, such as MacBook Air, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro, were left out of the initial update.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, these three lines are expected to receive M4 in 2025 for MacBook Air and mid-2025 for Mac Studio and Mac Pro. If these reports hold true, every Mac model will be updated, marking a first for Apple in over a decade.
Historically, Apple has not consistently updated all its Mac models within a single year. The last time this happened was in 2013, when the company introduced the trashcan Mac Pro alongside updated MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Mac mini models.
The upcoming M4 upgrade is seen as a significant step towards consistency in Apple’s refresh cycle. However, some speculate that the main driver behind this move might be to get rid of the older M3 chip, rather than a genuine attempt to improve the entire lineup.
