US President Donald Trump and Apple CEO Tim Cook have announced an agreement for the tech giant to invest $600 billion in the United States over the next four years. The plan includes initiatives such as partnering with suppliers, expanding smartphone glass production in Kentucky, and hiring 20,000 workers focused on research and development.
The announcement comes amid a trade war between the US and China, where Apple produces most of its devices. Trump has threatened tariffs of up to 25% on iPhones if production is not moved to the US. However, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed that iPhone assembly will not be relocated to the US in the near term.
The investment plan includes various projects, such as an “American Manufacturing Program,” a new manufacturing academy in Detroit, and AI servers near Houston. Analysts note that some of these investments were likely already in the works. The move is seen as a strategic effort by Apple to address Trump’s demands for the company to manufacture iPhones in the US.
With this announcement, Apple is also seeking tariff relief for its iPhones, which cost the company around $800 million in the June quarter. The investment commitment will help reduce costs and mitigate the impact of tariffs on the company’s products.
