Apple has officially announced the latest version of its tablet operating system, iPadOS 26. The flagship feature is a revamped multitasking system, which allows users to fluidly resize app windows and place them anywhere on the screen. This new windowing system can be used within Stage Manager, providing more intuitive and flexible multitasking capabilities.
The update also brings several Mac-like features to the iPad, including a menu bar accessible by swiping down from the top of the display, a new Preview app for viewing and marking up PDFs, and a Files app with a Mac-style list view. Developers can now make their apps run more powerfully in the background, and they’ll appear in Live Activities.
Other notable additions include the Journal app, previously exclusive to iPhone users, as well as access to the Apple Games hub and a Game Overlay feature for seamless gaming experiences.
The new iPadOS 26 is available for developers starting today, with a public beta scheduled for next month. The final update will be released officially this fall, supported on a range of devices including the latest iPad Pro models, iPad Air, and iPad mini.
