A major flaw has been discovered in Apple’s AirPlay protocol, allowing hackers to access devices connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The “AirBorne” vulnerability enables malicious actors to deploy malware, snoop on private data, or eavesdrop on conversations.
To protect themselves, users are advised to update all devices to the latest software, especially those using AirPlay. Disabling AirPlay altogether when not in use can also prevent hackers from gaining access. However, even unused devices, such as Bluetooth speakers, can be vulnerable if their manufacturers haven’t patched them.
The 23 vulnerabilities were found in Apple’s AirPlay protocol and SDK, which lets users share content between devices. While Apple has released security updates to fix the issue, millions of third-party gadgets may still be exposed if their manufacturers don’t patch them.
If a hacker gains access to one device on the same network, they can use it as a stepping stone to reach other connected devices. Cybersecurity experts warn that users often neglect these vulnerable third-party devices and that companies may also struggle to keep them patched due to lack of control over the hardware.
