Apple has issued a warning to its iPhone users, urging them to delete the commonly used Google Chrome browser due to concerns over digital privacy. The company’s video warning, titled “Privacy on iPhone: Flock,” uses a parody of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film “The Birds” to demonstrate how browser information can be easily tracked by advertisers.
The issue centers around FLoC, or Federated Learning of Cohorts, a web-tracking mechanism that allows advertisers to show relevant ads without tracking individuals across the web. However, Google has dropped this mechanism for a more invasive targeted-advertising approach.
Following Google’s decision not to remove third-party cookies in Chrome, Apple is promoting its browser, Safari, as a safer and more private option. While Chrome offers fast performance and enhanced features, experts argue that Safari is generally more secure and privacy-friendly.
When it comes to user security, Elly Hancock from Private Internet Access believes that Safari is the better choice, citing its increased security and privacy benefits. However, users who prefer Chrome’s speed and performance may continue to be tracked unless they use Incognito Mode or manually clear cookies.
