Apple Works on Face-Recognition Smart Locks

Apple is developing smart-home locks with face-recognition technology, aiming to compete with Google’s Nest and Amazon’s Ring in home security. The tech giant is reportedly working on a doorbell system that can automatically open homes by scanning users’ faces.

The move aligns with Apple’s growing interest in the home-devices market. If successful, the smart lock could be released at the end of 2025 or later. However, details about the product remain scarce due to Apple’s lack of comment on the matter.

This development may allow Apple to cross-sell its products and devices, such as iPhones and Apple Watches. But it also raises concerns about user privacy, a topic that CEO Tim Cook has prioritized in the past. In 2016, Cook refused to unlock an iPhone used by a suspect in a mass shooting, highlighting the company’s commitment to protecting users’ data.
