Apple Works on Next-Gen Pro Display XDR with Apple Silicon Chipset

Apple has been working on its next-generation high-end monitor, potentially replacing the Pro Display XDR, which was introduced in 2019. Despite advancements in display technology, Apple has left it untouched for three years.

Rumors suggest that the new monitor will be powered by an Apple Silicon chipset, allowing for features like a built-in camera and speakers. This is also expected to improve performance and reduce reliance on the attached computer’s resources.

A Bloomberg report from 2022 mentioned that the display was behind in development, but recent updates indicate that it may still happen sooner rather than later. Display analyst Ross Young expects the Pro Display XDR 2 to launch in late 2025 or early 2026.

Apple is also working on a second new monitor code-named J527, which could be a different screen size or specifications from the Pro Display XDR replacement. The next-generation Pro Display XDR is expected to adopt quantum-dot films, similar to those used in the M4 MacBook Pro.

Other rumors suggest that Apple may release a 27-inch miniLED display in 2025 and a 7K resolution display in the future. However, with a price tag of over $5000, developing a new version of the Pro Display XDR is considered less of a priority by Mark Gurman.
