Apple Works on Stripped-Down AI Chatbot Amid ChatGPT Competition

Apple is developing a stripped-down AI chatbot in-house, according to Bloomberg reports. The company has formed a dedicated team called “Answers, Knowledge and Information” with the goal of creating a rival to popular chatbot platform ChatGPT. Led by Robby Walker, who previously oversaw Siri development, the team aims to develop an AI search experience that can crawl the web to respond to questions.

The move represents a significant shift in Apple’s approach to artificial intelligence, as the company earlier partnered with OpenAI to enhance Siri capabilities instead of creating its own chatbot. However, this new team will focus on developing in-house AI services for Apple’s Siri, Spotlight, and Safari apps.

Apple has faced growing pains with AI development, including a delay in releasing an updated Siri version. In its latest earnings call, CEO Tim Cook expressed the company’s willingness to acquire other companies to accelerate its AI roadmap. This move is seen as a strategic effort by Apple to stay competitive in the rapidly evolving field of AI-powered chatbots.
