Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is calling on Apple to discontinue its AI-powered notification summary feature after it sent a false alert stating that Luigi Mangione, the alleged UnitedHealth shooter, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot. The mistake came despite Mangione’s actual survival and pending trial.
Vincent Berthier, head of RSF’s Technology and Journalism Desk, says the feature is “probability machines” that can’t be trusted to provide accurate information. He criticizes EU lawmakers for not classifying AI systems as high-risk in the AI Act, leaving a critical legal vacuum.
The error occurred just 48 hours after Apple Intelligence was launched in the UK. The company also previously made false statements about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s arrest, which the BBC has since complained to.
Apple CEO Tim Cook has acknowledged that his system is prone to hallucinations. However, similar errors have been reported with other major AI systems, including Google’s Gemini and X’s Grok, which claimed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had lost an election that hadn’t occurred yet.
