Apple’s Cutting-Edge 5G Modem Plans Ahead of Curve

Apple is working on three custom 5G modem variants for iPhones and iPads, set to launch in the next three years. The company aims to mass-produce these chips and potentially beat Qualcomm in performance and efficiency. If successful, this move will give Apple a competitive edge.

Besides iPhones and iPads, Apple plans to bring cellular connectivity to its Mac lineup for the first time. Bloomberg reports that the company is “investigating” the idea of integrating 5G capabilities into Macs, with a focus on professionals who frequently travel. The modem’s performance and efficiency will be comparable to Qualcomm’s iteration.

The three variants are expected to launch in different years: an entry-level chip next year for budget iPhone SE 4 and low-end iPad; a mid-range model in 2026 for the iPhone 18 Pro; and a high-performance variant in 2027. Apple’s custom modems will likely be integrated into future MacBook Pro designs.

While Apple has not confirmed the exact launch dates, Bloomberg estimates that cellular-enabled Macs might arrive as early as 2028, pending technological advancements. The company plans to charge more for the cellular variant of its Macs due to their utility and versatility.
