Apple’s digital car key technology has come a long way since its introduction in 2020. Originally launched as an iPhone and Apple Watch feature to unlock and start cars, it now boasts support from 33 automakers. While Apple hasn’t shared exact timelines or rollout details, GM has confirmed that the 2026 GMC Sierra EV will offer a standard Digital Key feature via an over-the-air update. Testing and validation can take around 12-18 months after the initial announcement, pointing to 2026 or early 2027 model year timing for Cadillac.
The bigger picture is one of industry alignment on shared standards, such as the Car Connectivity Consortium’s Digital Key Release 3.0. This standard adds hands-free passive entry and engine start using Ultra-Wideband and Bluetooth Low Energy, laying the groundwork for universal access across brands and devices.
As major tech and auto players come together, digital keys will become increasingly seamless. Industry standards will unlock practical perks like easier temporary access sharing, smoother rental and fleet use, and simpler family key management.
