Apple’s Foldable iPhone May Ditch Face ID for Touch ID

Apple is set to launch its long-awaited foldable iPhone, but recent leaks suggest that the device might not feature Face ID as expected. The new iPhone will have a novel hinge mechanism and a different aspect ratio than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold models. According to reports, the device could cost between $2,000 and $2,500.

However, the price is not the main concern for many fans of Apple devices. A recent report from Ming-Chi Kuo implies that the iPhone Fold might replace Face ID with Touch ID. This would be a significant departure from the traditional Face ID experience, which has been a staple feature on iPhones since 2017.

The reason behind this potential switch is the thickness of the device. Reports suggest that the foldable iPhone will be as thin as 4.5mm to 4.8mm when unfolded, making it difficult to fit the Face ID camera. To overcome this challenge, Apple might resort to Touch ID, a feature already used in non-Pro iPads and Samsung foldable phones.

The author of the article has mixed feelings about Touch ID. While they appreciate its functionality, they have struggled with using it on their iPad mini 7, citing issues with sensor accuracy and user experience. The author worries that these problems might persist on an ultra-thin foldable phone.

Another challenge Apple faces is where to place the Face ID sensor. On the cover screen or inside the device? A solution would need to be found to ensure seamless authentication both when unfolded and when closed.
