Apple’s iPad Gets New Multitasking Features, Still Distinct from Mac

Apple has finally introduced a new multitasking system for its iPadOS 26 update, which promises to bring more functionality to the tablet. The new feature is built on the foundation of Stage Manager, but with a more willingness to borrow ideas from macOS.

For years, Apple has maintained that the iPad and Mac are different devices, each requiring unique approaches to usability. While this commitment is admirable, it sometimes feels like it’s held back the iPad’s capabilities. A mouse cursor was added, but only as a rounded and imprecise option due to the iPad’s touch-first nature.

Similarly, the new multitasking system takes cues from macOS’s classic windowed approach, but with some key differences. Users will still be tied to a unique interface for grouping windows, rather than having complete control over their layout.

However, this update marks a shift towards greater consistency between iOS and iPadOS devices. Apple has taken steps to ensure that its system works well in both landscape and portrait modes, accommodating the different ways users interact with the tablet.

The new multitasking features are now available in public beta ahead of the official release this fall. While it’s not a drastic overhaul, the update shows Apple’s willingness to adapt its approach while still maintaining its unique identity.
