Apple’s Voice Memos App Gets Layered Recording Feature

Apple is updating its Voice Memos app with a new feature that allows iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max users to record vocals on top of instrumental tracks without needing headphones. The update, available in iOS 18.2, enables “Layered Recordings” using machine learning, which can sync across Mac devices.

Users can choose from various background instrumentals or send an existing instrumental mix into the app for easy vocal recording. These recordings can be further mixed and produced in professional apps like Logic Pro. The new feature was first announced at Apple’s September event as a replacement for the discontinued Music Memos iPhone app.

Apple is demoing the feature with a new holiday track featuring Michael Bublé, Carly Pearce, and Greg Wells. The update allows users to share recordings and import them into Logic Pro on Mac or iPad, making it easier for musicians and producers to collaborate. The iOS 18 update also brought audio transcriptions to Voice Memos, allowing users to view speech transcriptions while recording or after.
