April’s Sky Showers Lure Nighttime Stargazers

Astronomers say that during the month of April, viewers in the Northern Hemisphere can witness spectacular meteor showers and other dazzling displays all month long. The Lyrids and Eta Aquarids will appear simultaneously from April 20 to 26, offering stunning fireballs streaking through the sky.

The Lyrids originate from Comet Thatcher and peak during late April, releasing about 18 meteors per hour. Best viewed in the darkest hours after moonset and before predawn, they radiate near the star Vega. In contrast, the Eta Aquarids, originating from Comet Halley, typically peak in early May but will be active from April 20 to May 21.

Additionally, early April offers a chance to attempt the “Messier Marathon,” a challenge to view as many of the 110 Messier objects as possible. Notable events include the Pleiades star cluster appearing near the Moon, the moon aligning with Jupiter, and the sun’s magnetic field reaching solar maximum, making northern lights events more frequent.

These celestial events can be seen from the Northern Hemisphere both through telescopes and the naked eye, according to astronomers.
