Several Arab nations, including Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, are urging Hamas to lay down its arms and agree to a two-state solution. The “New York Declaration” backed by the European Union and 17 other countries calls for the unification of Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority’s control, with an end to armed group rule and dismantling of military capabilities.
The declaration, which includes demands for Israel to issue a commitment to a two-state solution, comes as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rages on. The document emphasizes that only a political solution can bring about peace and security. Arab nations are seeking a sovereign and economically viable Palestinian state living side-by-side with Israel in peace and security.
The declaration also calls for an end to the war in Gaza, demands the return of remains, exchange of prisoners, and Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. It expresses support for mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, and the US. A transitional committee would be established under the Palestinian Authority’s umbrella following a ceasefire.
Israel has rejected the proposition, stating that it will not back down from its goal of eliminating Hamas. The US also expressed disinterest in participating, calling it “unproductive” and “ill-timed.”
