Egypt and its neighboring countries have moved against US President Donald Trump’s plan to displace Palestinians from Gaza, proposing an alternative solution to rebuild the devastated territory.
The proposal, which spans several years, involves removing rubble and reconstruction in phases, ensuring that Palestinians remain in their homeland. Funding for the massive rebuilding effort will be crucial, with Egypt in talks with the UN and World Bank to secure necessary funds.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi has stated that displacement of Palestinians is an injustice, emphasizing the need for international support and adoption of a plan that does not involve forcible displacement. A meeting on the proposal will take place in Riyadh next week, which may garner backing from further afield.
The US administration remains open to other suggestions, but it’s unclear how much support a unified Arab stance might garner from Mr Trump or Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who have been critical of the plan.
