Argentina has been ordered to give up its controlling stake in energy company YPF SA, a move that deals a significant blow to President Javier Milei ahead of midterm elections. The US District Judge Loretta Preska gave the Argentine government 14 days to surrender 51% of the company’s shares, which will then be transferred to plaintiffs led by Burford Capital, a litigation funding firm. This decision is linked to a $16 billion US court judgment against Argentina for its 2012 nationalization of YPF SA. The takeover comes after Burford acquired the interests of former YPF shareholders affected by the nationalization.
