Argentina Protests Over Pension Cuts, Police Crack Down

Riot police in Buenos Aires used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters demanding better economic policies from President Javier Milei’s government. The protests, which began over pension cuts, saw at least 15 people injured and over 100 arrested.

The demonstrations started after a video of an elderly man being beaten by police went viral, drawing thousands of protesters to the streets. Retirees were joined by football fans who were angered by a new resolution banning anyone with “violent behaviour” from entering soccer stadiums.

Protesters chanted slogans against Milei’s government, comparing it to Argentina’s 1976-1983 military dictatorship. The clashes escalated near the Congress building and Plaza de Mayo, with protesters throwing firecrackers, stones, and debris.

The government has implemented drastic austerity measures, including pension cuts that have left many retirees struggling. A recent law increase was vetoed by Milei last year, leaving nearly 60% of retirees receiving only the minimum amount.

The protests come amid high emotions in Argentina, with the trial of medical staff accused of negligence over Diego Maradona’s death in 2020 nearing its start.
