Argentina’s River Turned Red Amid Industrial Pollution Concerns

A small river in Buenos Aires, the Sarandí, turned a deep red after what is believed to be a leak from a nearby factory. The incident has alarmed local residents who have long complained about industrial pollution in the area.

Residents reported a “nauseating” smell coming off the water and suspected a nearby tannery was responsible for the contamination. One resident, María Ducomls, described the scene as “a bloody stream,” saying the red waters were just one of many episodes of pollution she has witnessed.

The regional environment department is investigating the incident and collected two liters of water samples to determine the cause of the discoloration. It is believed to be an organic colouring substance. The color of the waters had faded by Thursday afternoon, but concerns over industrial pollution persist in the area.
