Argentine Judge Charges Ex-President with Violence Against Former First Lady

Argentina’s former President Alberto Fernández has been charged with committing violence against his ex-wife, Fabiola Yáñez. A federal judge ruled that there is sufficient evidence to proceed with formal charges, citing “minor and serious injuries” and a context of gender violence. The judge also froze 10 million pesos ($8 million) on part of Fernández’s assets.

Fernández denies the allegations, which were made by Yáñez in August 2024. However, prosecutor’s evidence includes WhatsApp conversations with Fernández’s private secretary, medical certificates, and testimony from family and friends. The judge found that eight years of “psychological and physical aggression” caused permanent damage to Yáñez’s health.

Fernández could face up to 18 years in prison if convicted. He can appeal the decision, which will be reviewed by higher courts before proceeding to trial.
