Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, both Oscar-nominated stars of the hit musical “Wicked,” brought their unique talents back to Las Vegas for the CinemaCon convention. The duo donned striking all-black outfits as they introduced the first-ever look at the upcoming film adaptation, “Wicked: For Good.”
Set before and after the events of “The Wizard of Oz,” “For Good” explores the origin story of Grande’s Glinda and Erivo’s Elphaba, two witches who become unlikely friends. The movie picks up after Elphaba is declared an enemy of the state by the Wizard and Madame Morrible.
In a thrilling trailer, Elphaba studies ancient spells in preparation for a showdown with her enemies, while Glinda adjusts to life under the Wizard’s guidance. Meanwhile, the iconic shots of Dorothy’s arrival in Oz remain a highlight of the film.
Grande and Erivo performed their powerful vocals on second-act favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed,” showcasing their incredible range as they prepare for their roles in the sequel.
The audience was thrilled by the sneak peek, which came ahead of the movie’s November 22 release. “Wicked: For Good” has the potential to surpass its predecessor’s global box office success, with the first film earning $744 million worldwide. The musical adaptation has also been widely acclaimed, with numerous Academy Award nominations.
Producer Marc Platt noted that the popularity of the film adaptation has boosted interest in the stage show, which is having its best year and highest grosses ever. Universal’s president of domestic distribution, Jim Orr, praised the global impact of “Wicked,” saying it has created an overwhelming response from fans.
