Ariana Grande Speaks Out Against Body-Shaming Comments

Pop star and actress Ariana Grande is speaking out against body-shaming comments, a topic she’s all too familiar with due to her high-profile career. In an interview with French journalist Sally, Grande addresses the recent criticism she’s received on her appearance.

Grande says that as a teenager, she was already under scrutiny, calling herself a “petri dish” for others to comment on her body. She shares that hearing comments on her body and weight as a child was particularly damaging because it was hard for her to protect herself from the noise at such a young age.

“The discomfort is real, no matter what scale you’re experiencing,” she says. “I think in today’s society, we shouldn’t have comfortability commenting on others’ looks, appearance, or health.”

Grande has been vocal about body positivity in the past, including a TikTok post last year where she confronted comments on her social media feeds, saying “You never know what someone is going through.” Her 2024 single “yes, and?” even promotes the message of not commenting on others’ bodies.

We applaud Grande for speaking out against body-shaming comments. Nutrition expert Jessica Ball agrees that commenting on someone’s body can be more damaging than encouraging, perpetuating diet culture and reducing individuals to their appearance.

For those struggling with unsolicited comments from family members or social media, Grande offers advice: “Block people, I don’t care if you delete the app entirely. Keep yourself safe because no one has the right to say s***.”
