Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket successfully deployed a French spy satellite in its first fully operational launch on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for the continent’s space program. The uncrewed launcher lifted off from Kourou, French Guiana, and carried out a trio of military platforms.
The launch was seen as a test for European autonomy in space, following years of delays and criticism over reliance on US rival SpaceX. Ariane 6 is built by ArianeGroup, co-owned by Airbus and Safran, and had previously staged a partially successful inaugural test flight.
European leaders held a summit to boost European defense on the same day, as the continent seeks to expand its independent access to space. The launch was carried out for the French Air Force’s Space Command, and although it was technically considered a commercial debut, it marked a significant step forward for Europe’s space program.
The satellite is part of a trio of military platforms, with Ariane 6 set to carry more payloads in the future. This marks a return to space for a continent facing questions over its role amid a security rift with the US.
