Aspirin Use Outdated for Healthy Older Adults, Survey Finds

A recent survey has revealed that nearly half of US adults are unaware of outdated medical advice suggesting that taking an aspirin a day can keep heart attacks away. The new guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend that healthy older adults not take daily low-dose aspirin due to increased risks of bleeding. Instead, 71-year-olds and those at high risk of bleeding should not take aspirin, while those between 40-70 with a higher risk of heart disease may consider it as a prevention strategy. The survey found that nearly one in two respondents believed the benefits outweighed the risks, despite the outdated advice being widely held by healthcare providers for years.
