Assad Ousted After 14 Years of Brutal Rule

Syrians have welcomed the ousting of President Bashar Assad after 14 years of brutal rule, with many hailing it as a new beginning for the war-torn country. The opposition forces, led by Islamist rebel group Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, successfully toppled Assad’s regime in swift attacks starting November 27, capturing key cities and advancing quickly toward the capital.

Assad’s departure marks an end to 54 years of iron-fisted Baath Party rule under his family. While many residents celebrated his ouster, others were cautious about the takeover by HTS, citing concerns over its extremist past.

However, HTS leader Ahmad Sharaa has distanced himself from his jihadist roots and appears more moderate, vowing to ensure women’s rights and prevent alcohol bans. The new leadership has promised a “strong and efficient” governance system, with representation for Syria’s diverse ethnic and religious communities.

Syrian opposition forces have welcomed the change, hailing it as a victory after 14 years of fighting against Assad’s regime. Analysts say the ousting was largely due to the Syrian people’s determination for freedom, which proved costly even for Assad’s allies Russia and Iran.

The quick fall of Assad has sparked concerns over the future of Syria, with many facing significant challenges ahead. Despite initial celebrations, there are now fears of instability and violence, as well as the need for security, safety, and improved living conditions.

As Syria stands at a crossroads, the performance of its new leadership will be crucial in determining the country’s future.
