Assad Regime Falls Amid Rebel Advance in Damascus

The Syrian regime under President Bashar Assad has collapsed, with rebel fighters seizing control of the capital city Damascus. Assad fled to exile in Moscow, marking the end of a 50-year rule by his family.

Russia’s involvement in Syria is notable, as Russian President Vladimir Putin supported Assad in 2011, helping him maintain power for over 13 years through brutal repression. However, with Russia currently bogged down in the Ukraine invasion, Assad now resides in Moscow, where he faces bleak living arrangements.

The fall of the Assad regime may embolden others facing similar challenges worldwide, particularly those in authoritarian regimes like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea. Nonetheless, history suggests that removing dictators willing to commit atrocities is a difficult process. The downfall of Adolf Hitler required a global conflict and 50 million deaths.
