Assad’s Fall Sparks Concern Over Iran’s Regional Influence

The collapse of the Syrian regime under President Bashar al-Assad has significant implications for the regional balance of power, particularly for Iran. The ascendance of Sunni Islamist rebels, such as Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), poses a threat to Hezbollah’s military power in Lebanon and its ability to project influence throughout the region.

The loss of Syria as a critical node in Iran’s “axis of resistance” network will further isolate Tehran and undermine its ability to use proxies to exert control. This development is particularly concerning for Israel, which has already dismantled the leadership and operational infrastructures of two out of three of Iran’s main proxy groups, leaving only the Houthis as a remaining threat.

With Hezbollah’s military power severely weakened by Israeli airstrikes and geographical isolation from Iran, its opponents in Lebanon may feel emboldened to challenge its influence. The US and its regional allies should prioritize greater assistance to the Lebanese Armed Forces to fill the security vacuum left by Hezbollah’s weakening and better defend Lebanon against potential threats.

As Assad’s fall continues to shape the region, the international community must carefully consider how to address the emerging power dynamics and prevent further destabilization.
